Who we are
Nottinghamshire currently has a two-tier system, with information about the first tier and second tier below. Nottingham City Council is already a unitary authority and information about, alongside the role of Parish and Town Councils, is below. (The 10 Nottinghamshire town and 151 parish councils are not included as part of LGR.)
First Tier - Nottinghamshire County Council
Nottinghamshire County Council is currently the first-tier authority, covering the whole of Nottinghamshire, excluding Nottingham City. It provides large, strategic services including:
- adult social care, such as support for people with disabilities, or care for the elderly,
- education and children’s services, such as looked after children, those with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), fostering, and adoption,
- highways including potholes, footpaths, drainage, public rights of way, and street lighting
- buses,
- libraries and
- waste disposal.
Second Tier - seven borough and district councils
The second tier is made up of seven borough and district councils.
These councils are:
- Ashfield District Council: serving a population of 126,300 residents.
- Bassetlaw District Council: serving a population of 117,800 residents.
- Broxtowe Borough Council: serving a population of 110,900 residents.
- Gedling Borough Council: serving a population of 117,300 residents.
- Mansfield District Council: serving a population of 110,500 residents.
- Newark and Sherwood District Council: serving a population of 122,900 residents.
- Rushcliffe Borough Council: serving a population of 119,000 residents.
Each of these provide local services across their area, including:
- waste and recycling collections,
- street cleaning,
- clearing up and tackling fly-tipping,
- deciding planning applications and where new homes will be built,
- providing social housing,
- providing and maintaining parks and open spaces,
- providing sports and cultural facilities,
- handling benefit and Council Tax payments and
- environmental health and licensing.
Nottingham City Council
Nottingham City Council is an existing unitary authority, which means that it delivers all the services above, in its geographical area, to a population of 323,700 residents.
Town and Parish Councils
While not directly involved in LGR in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, in most parts of the county there are also town and parish councils that make up a third layer of local government. These provide very localised services at village or parish level such as managing community halls, cemeteries, and allotments. Town and parish councils aren’t directly affected by LGR, but they may be asked to take on different services in the future as a result.
